Ema Skye's parents died when she was little; she was raised by her sister, Lana. When Ema was 14, on a stormy evening, she went to the police station to wait for her sister Lana. She stayed in Lana's office (which a man named Damon Gant also shared). A man named Joe Darke was being questioned for a string of murders. Suddenly, the power went out in the office, and Darke used it to escape. He found the office, and likewise, Ema, and attacked, but not before the interference of Neil Marshall. A struggle ensued, and Neil knocked Darke unconscious, but Ema, thinking Neil was Darke, pushed him, then fell unconscious herself. When she awoke, Neil was dead. Ema testified that Darke killed Neil, and Darke was found guilty.

Two years passed. Bruce Goodman, an investigator from that case, was found dead in Edgeworth's trunk. A picture from a witness showed Lana Skye standing over Edgeworth's trunk. Ema, now 16 and a scientific investigator-slash-junior in high school, upon hearing her sister was being charged with murder, went to seek out Lana's friend from law school, Mia Fey. She was always told by Lana that if there was trouble, Mia was who to turn to. However, Ema found Phoenix Wright instead, and to her dismay, was told Mia was dead. Seeing a glaring similarity between Ema and Maya (and verily, Lana and Mia), Phoenix agreed to take the case, even after Lana told him, flat out, she committed the crime. Ema refused to believe it, knowing her sister wouldn't do something like that. After much investigating, some science, and a couple of heated courtroom battles, Phoenix managed to clear the fog and reveal the truth: that Gant was responsible for both the murders of Neil Marshall and Bruce Goodman.

What Ema didn't know two years ago was that while she (and the other two men) were knocked out, Gant entered the office. Knowing an opportunity when he saw one, he impaled Neil Marshall on a suit of armor in his office, cut out a piece of vest that had Ema's fingerprints on it, and even wrote Ema's name in Neil's blood on a piece of broken pottery - everything made it look like Ema killed him.

After that was completed, Lana entered the room, and saw the scene. Gant knew Lana would want to protect her sister, so he helped her alter the scene again (which he had just done) and made it look like Darke had killed Neil by stabbing him in the back with a switchblade. They gave their faulty evidence to a young prosecutor named Miles Edgeworth. Ema testified, and Darke was found guilty and sentenced to death. Lauded for his success, Gant was made Chief of Police, and he made Lana his Chief Prosecutor; this way, also due to his evidence against Ema, he could make Lana do anything he wanted. As an added shield of protection, he fired or transferred everyone else involved in the case. After that, Lana became cold and stiff, distancing herself from Ema.

As for the second murder, Goodman was killed by Gant when he got too close to the truth. He used his control over Lana to get her to dispose of the body, using Edgeworth's car. After Edgeworth unknowingly transported the body in his trunk, Lana followed and pulled out Gant's knife from Goodman's body, replacing it with Edgeworth's, to frame him. However, a woman named Angel Starr, who was also involved in the Darke case (now known as SL-9) saw this, and falsely believed Lana was delivering the fatal stab to Goodman. After taking a picture of the incident with her camera, Angel ran over to where Lana was and made her presence known. Caught finishing off what Gant had started, Lana was now treated as the murderer when she was merely being blackmailed by the true killer. However, if she had any hope of protecting Ema, then speaking out was impossible.

Lana is relieved to be free of the chains that kept her silent and cold, the only way she could survive the two years of being under Gant's thumb. Still, she was Gant's accomplice, and was scheduled for a trial for those crimes. Lana also apologized to Ema, for lying to her, but Ema wasn't mad, and the sisters shared a hug.

Ema then traveled abroad to Europe, to study for her forensics exam. She wrote letters frequently to Lana, who was serving her sentence in jail. Ema's training went on for four years, till she finally felt ready to take the exam.

Ema passed her exam, becoming a full fledged forensic investigator.

Now 20, Ema happily celebrated her passing the exam with Lana, who had just been released from jail. After Lana went back to the States to try and rebuild her life, Ema started 'apprenticing' with the London police, and stayed there for five years. She blossomed into a beautiful young woman, and an outstanding forensic investigator. She was ready to be on her own, but she didn't think London was for her, so she set out to find a place where her skills were the most needed.
